Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
