Greek Police Strengthen Security After Demonstrations Against Israel Cruise Ship

Hellenic officials have substantially boosted safety arrangements at two key ports in an initiative to prevent demonstrators from approaching a cruise liner transporting Israeli tourists on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.

Latest Demonstrations Trigger Increased Security

The heightened security at Patras and Katakolo was implemented following recent demonstrations when the MS Crown Iris arrived in Kalamata earlier this week. Earlier, passengers aboard the same vessel were unable to leave the ship and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after community members organized demonstrations on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"Despite the peace agreement, Israel is persisting with its attacks in Gaza," commented a schoolteacher who took part in the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, unarmed individuals are being killed."

Tourist Experience and Popular Sentiment

From the upper deck, tourists observed as protesters in Kalamata chanted: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

Yannis Sifanakis, who dedicated the summer to coordinating anti-conflict rallies across Greece, declared: "Those Israelis who approve of the decisions of their administration aren't accepted here."

Geopolitical Background and Diplomatic Relations

An international relations expert explained: "Owing to close location and our traditional ties with the Middle East, the average Greek is more responsive to what is happening in Gaza than the average European from central or northern regions."

"The Hellenic Republic is in a difficult position," he added. "Israel is much more important for us as an partner than it is for the majority of European countries."

Commercial and Tourism Consequences

National figures indicate that over 600,000 Israeli travelers traveled to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of even higher numbers this year. This significant arrival emphasizes the much-improved relationship between the both states since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a firmly pro-Palestinian policy.

Tactical Alliance and Geographic Considerations

For the Greek government, Israel serves as not only a significant counterbalance to regional rival Turkey but also grants the added benefit of better official channels to Washington.

"Greece is not going to jeopardize its ties with Israel," stated Filis. "However from a ethical standpoint we must be more accepting, more balanced, more resolved to show the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and Global Reaction

The extent of the Greek rally initiative has caught Israel off guard. In recent months, the nation's diplomatic department counseled visitors to maintain a low profile, while domestic press described Athens as a "lost paradise" due to protest markings appearing on structures in the downtown area.

The head official of the Jewish Community Leadership in Greece expressed concern: "Of course we're anxious. The kind of discourse we're hearing can quickly turn into antisemitic."

Upcoming Events and Requests

Gradually, opponents have aimed at Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Approximately 5,000 people recently traveled to Crete to demand the termination of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO facility that after the commencement of conflict in Gaza has functioned as a key refuelling post for US military ships, fighter planes and ships bound for Israel.

"There have been victories," declared an anti-racist coordinator. "Our central requirement, currently, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
