The English along with Wales Drawn in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing mirrors their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they claimed a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups cannot meet holders and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on the same half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a round of 16 stage for the very first time in the competition's existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Pool B – most likely Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
