This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu as of this moment.
